Here is what we will be learning in October:
Tuesday, October 1st, 2019.
Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s);
With the month of September behind us, we can look forward to many exciting activities in October.
Science: We are finishing up our unit on Buoyancy and Boats. For a final project, students will have access to a variety of materials. They will plan and build their very own boats. We will then begin a new unit on Magnets. In this unit, students explore the interaction of magnets with a variety of materials found within their own environment. By testing the effects of one magnet on another they learn that magnets show polarity and that the strength of magnetic effects diminishes with distance.
Social Studies: When working on maps, students learned about symbols, legends as well as direction (North, South, East, West). We will soon be starting a unit on “What is a community”. What does a community represent and how do we belong in our community. We will soon take a “trip” to Iqaluit. Students will learn what daily life is like in this community, natural resources found in this territory, Inuit artists, Inuit traditions, festivals and foods.
Math: We will continue our work on numbers to 100. Students will recognize numbers to 100 and solve mathematical problems (Develops and applies mathematical knowledge through problem solving). Students will recognize if numbers are odd or even. They will work on place value (tens and ones) as well as use symbols such as “bigger than”, “smaller than" or equal. Towards the end of the month, we will begin a pattern unit. Students will create and recognize 4 attribute patterns. We will also work on number patterns counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
French: The themes this month will be l’Automne, l’Action de Grâce (Thanksgiving) as well as Halloween. We will also review complex sounds. Home reading books were sent home yesterday. Please take a look at the home reading duotang for the necessary information. We will also continue our work on Daily Five, Writer and Reader Workshops.
